Dr Gabriel Bodard (PhD, Classics, Reading) is trained in Classical literature and history and is currently employed as Research Associate on the Inscriptions of Aphrodisias Project. His research interests within the classics include Greek religion, magic, epigraphy, and papyrology, with a focus on the early Greek world; his doctoral dissertation was titled Witches, Cursing, and Necromancy: perceptions of "magic" in early Greece. Interests within humanities computing include XML design and analysis, electronic publication, and language and text encoding.

Activities:

• Founder editor of the Digital Classicist community, applying humanities computing to the study of the ancient world. Organised seminar series at the Institute of Classical Studies (June-August 2006), and a panel at the Classical Association Annual Conference (April 2007)
• An active participant in the EpiDoc Collaborative, guidelines for the encoding of ancient epigraphic documents in XML, and involved in the TEI community
• On the steering committee of the Epigraphy Society (2005-2008)
• Technical Observer on the Pleiades Project, providing geographical information on the ancient world
• Co-organiser of the Open Source Critical Editions workshop, sponsored by the Methods Network (September 2006)
• Editor of The Future Fire, journal of speculative fiction and criticism

• Research Associate on the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae, University of California, Irvine (2000-2001)
• Research Assistant and technical adviser on the Imagines Italicae project, Institute of Classical Studies (2003-2004)
• Research Assistant on the Liber Vitae Dunelmensis project (2003-2004)
• XML and XSLT work with the CCH XML Team
• Has also taught Greek language and literature at several colleges both in London and elsewhere.
